Geography
At Fryent, the geography curriculum is cross-curricular and taught as a block of 8 weeks. It has been designed as block learning to allow children sufficient time to become fluent in their knowledge, recall previous knowledge accumulated through the exploration of each topic over each year; starting in Early Years and extending to Year 6. The geography curriculum at Fryent has been designed to address the needs of our students and familiarise them with concepts at the heart of geographical understanding. Exposure to world as well as local geography is necessary for them to make links and identify similarities and differences between towns, cities and countries. The children learn through an enquiry process where an overarching question is chosen to guide independent learning experiences and add value to skills and knowledge. Access to high-quality resources allows students to describe natural and human environments and appreciate the diverse nature of physical and human geography across our planet.
Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Geography by providing a broad, balanced and adapted curriculum and ensuring the progressive development of geographical concepts such as place, space, scale, interconnection, change, sustainability and environment in a variety of ways. We aim to provide the children to use a range of resources like maps, glops, aerial photographs, digital maps and compasses to support their learning. Our aim is to promote children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, a curiosity about the world they live in, people, resources and natural and human environment.
